Feb. 1, 2003. A sad day .... we had all seen the Columbia tragedy on TV early that morning, and would have the day "away from it all" to reflect.

Three riders gathered in Mulvane late in the morning at Laurie's Kitchen for a great breakfast. Making the ride this day: "Beemer Bill" Emond rode in on his BMW F650GS, Don "Sodbuster" Morgan rode his KTM 640 LC4, and myself, Roger "Mr. Clean" Baugh, on my spotless KLR650. We rode south and east into Cowley county on a "bridge hunting" tour. The objective was to find the turn-of-the-century stone arch bridges at Floral, KS and north of Cambridge, KS. We managed through trial and error, GPS, and backtracking a couple of dead-ends to find at least three very good examples of the dozen or so stone bridges still standing in the county. We then turned north and west into Butler county to visit the 1885 iron bridge at Bois D'Arc.

We did make the acquaintance of an armadillo out for a stroll. It wasn't bothered by us, and I was able to get within arm's reach for a photo or two.

It was a great day of riding, with temperatures in the high 50s and low 60s. For February ... it felt more like a late March or early April. Hope we get a few more weekends like this before Spring. Happy Trails!
